There is something about bringing a touch of contrast into a room that adds interest; let’s say you have a moody, dark coloured room that, while you love the colour, always seems too dark. It’s not always practical or possible to bring in extra light from outside, and you have already capitalised on all the artificial light you can, so why not look at light coloured rugs? This method of brightening up a darker room is particularly impressive where dark carpets or wooden floors are involved, but beware the pitfalls of keeping them clean!

White rugs are a brilliant addition to a room, but you must make sure the family understand the perils of getting a white rug dirty. It’s easy to do, after all, especially with feet tramping dirt in from outdoors on the soles of shoes and boots. That’s why footwear must be removed before walking on your precious white or light coloured rug; if not, you will find you are washing it more often than you wish!

Of course, most modern rugs can be machine or hand washed, and an occasional cleaning will help rid your rugs of the dirt ingrained by cat hairs and everyday use. However, more solid stains can be hard to remove from lighter colours, so make sure you take care of any white rugs. It makes a great change to a room, and brings added style and light, but remember to look after your rug and you will have a lifetime of use.
