Once you have selected your beautiful traditional style or fabulous contemporary rug, it needs to be able to survive the rigours of daily life.
Footfall will crush the pile, dirt will dull the colours and age may cause loss of fibres.
Amongst all of this daily wear, there are the occasional spillages of food and drink that can attack your rug.
Regular housekeeping will maintain your rug and keep it in tip top condition, but for the odd accident you will need to use special measures. For red wine spills you will need to dab the area immediately to reduce the amount of liquid on the rug. Make sure that you only dab at the area to ensure that you don’t spread the stain any further.
You can then use a small amount of carpet shampoo to continue the cleaning process. Other remedies for removing red wine spills include white wine, which will neutralize the red wine, therefore making it easier to remove the stain. Continue to blot the area until the stain is removed. If this does not fully clean the area, you can use salt to lift out the red pigment.
Vinegar can also be used in the first instance, with the added benefit of washing powder to finalise the clean. If you can’t remember what you are supposed to use for a red wine stain, pour salt onto the area. This will prevent the spill from setting until you can find out the information you need to proceed.
