Rugs are far from a new invention. Far from it, in fact, for they have been with us in one form or another for thousands of years.

If you consider the origins of Persian rugs, still available today in the traditional patterns that echo the originals, you are going back to a time that is simply incomprehensible to us.

Those were days when tribes moved from place to place and lived in tent-like constructions with the earth for a floor. A rug would be carried by families to cover the dry, dusty floor and make things a little more comfortable than otherwise. This practice is one that we still carry out today when we decide to cover a pale, cold floor with a pretty attractive rug.

The beauty of the Persian rug – and many other examples from this area of the Middle East and North Africa – is that it is a colourful, traditional design with a rich history. This sort of rug belongs in the large, stylish room of old, yet looks equally at home in a more modern setting. It’s about decoration in the extreme, a beautiful look that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so.

Today you can buy traditional types of rugs that look like the real thing – a genuine original will cost you a huge amount of money – quite cheaply, and bring that beautiful Persian classic look into your home. Such designs are traditional and long lived because, quite simply, they are timeless.
